Staple styles…
Most women have a lot more than two
pairs of trousers, skirts and tops.
Still, somehow when it comes to coats,
it’s seen as rather greedy to
have more than two - a daily coat for
work and errands, and a fancy coat
for special occasions. It’s an
odd state of affairs, considering that
the coat often has to work harder than
its counterparts underneath, working
as it must with all the other items
in the wardrobe (especially if it is
never taken off). Why do we expect
one coat to go with all our other garments?
Much better instead to make sure you’ve
three or four in your wardrobe which
will meet different sartorial needs.
They’ll last much longer as well
because you’ll be rotating them
rather than heavily relying on one.
Here’s a rundown of coat staples
that every wardrobe needs.
Trench - made famous by the house
of Burberry, the military origins of
the trench coat make it popular amongst
both sexes. It’s a classic and
for good reason; the trench can be
smartened up for a more formal look,
but with plenty of pockets, made of
waterproof material and large collar,
it’s also very practical and
can withstand the pressures of daily
use. If you’re petite make sure
to buy a mini version which will be
much more flattering than a full length
style.
Pea coat: Another coat with a heavy
militaristic influence, the pea coat
adds a rather androgynous look to any
outfit. The traditional look is always
the same – wool, navy, brass
buttons, double breasted, medium sized
lapels - but the high street can have
its own take, whether it’s different
colours, buttons or fabrics. They look
great teamed with simple outfits -
jeans and a t-shirt can be lifted with
the addition of a pea coat. Take a
look at the New Look website for a
selection of great coats.
Leather jacket: The leather jacket
often evokes certain ideas - rock and
roll, teenage rebellion, hell’s
angels - but despite these connotations,
a leather jacket is one of the few
items that will work with most items
in a wardrobe. Paired with a sweet
floral dress to toughen up the ensemble
or worn with jeans for a casual look,
the leather jacket is always a good
look.
